Winter fun crafts for speech and language!

Winter Snowman Craft

Materials:

• Construction paper in winter colors (blue, red, green, orange, black, etc.)
• Scissors
• Glue or tape
• Markers or crayons
• Cotton balls
• Small googly eyes

Speech Therapy Targets:

• Articulation: Focus on speech sounds like “s,” “sh,” “ch,” “b,” “p,” and “m” that are common in winter vocabulary (snow, cold, snowman, mittens, boots, ice).
• Vocabulary: Seasonal vocabulary words (snow, cold, freeze, snowflake, mittens, scarf, hat, snowman, sleet).
• Sentence Structure: Create simple and complex sentences to describe the snowman (e.g., “The snowman has a red hat” or “The snowman is wearing a blue scarf”).
• Following Directions: Give step-by-step instructions to assemble the snowman (e.g., “Cut out two circles for the snowman’s body,” “Glue the buttons on the snowman”).

1. Create the Snowman’s Body:
   • Have the child cut out three large circles from white construction paper. The circles should be different sizes: large for the bottom, medium for the middle, and small for the head.
   • Glue the circles together to form the snowman’s body.
2. Decorate the Snowman:
   • Face: Draw or glue googly eyes, a carrot-shaped orange paper nose, and a smiling mouth. For older children, they can practice using specific sounds like “m” in “mouth” and “n” in “nose.”
   • Accessories: Cut out pieces of construction paper to make a scarf, a hat, mittens, and buttons. Have the child describe each item as they place it on the snowman (e.g., “This is a red scarf,” “These are green mittens”).
   • Buttons: Glue cotton balls or small paper circles down the snowman’s body to represent buttons. The child can practice saying words like “button,” “circle,” “big,” “small,” etc.
3. Snowy Background:
   • Have the child glue cotton balls or use white paint to create “snow” around the snowman. This helps with fine motor skills and can be a chance to practice words like “snow,” “cold,” and “flakes.”
   • For added fun, have the student describe the weather (e.g., “It is snowy today,” “It is very cold outside”).
4. Sentence Practice:
   • After the snowman is complete, encourage the child to make sentences about their creation. For example:
     • “The snowman has a big hat.”
     • “I made a snowman with a blue scarf.”
     • “The snowman is cold.”
