Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used in new and exciting ways that are reaching the average person in a more personal way, now more than ever before. As such, it is not surprising that AI has begun to be used within the practice of speech and language pathology as well. Below are listed just some of the few ways that we will begin to see its use within our field. As practitioners it is our goal to use this technology for efficiency and to assist in accuracy. However, each therapist will have to be mindful that it is not a replacement for sound clinical judgement. Caregivers, clients, and therapists will have to partner together to make use of these new technological advancements in the future.
- Analyzing speech patterns: AI can analyze speech patterns, score audio samples, and assess fluency. This can help SLPs understand a patient’s progress and adjust therapy techniques.
- Developing treatment plans: AI can help SLPs develop individualized intervention plans. For example, ChatGPT can generate structured and goal-oriented session plans.
- Providing real-time feedback: AI can provide real-time feedback during therapy sessions.
- Improving data collection: AI can improve the accuracy and efficiency of data collection and analysis during evaluations.
- Enhancing teletherapy: AI voice therapy technology can enhance and clarify what’s happening on the other end of the microphone during remote therapy sessions.
- Developing training materials: AI can develop training materials that are specific to therapy plans.
- Personalizing exercises: AI can personalize exercises to make the communication development process more effective and engaging.
