September 2016 edition of the Wee Speech Newsletter.

Happenings in the Clinic and around town:

This summer, Meghan Matthews, Kate Fallen and Annie Gatziolis had the pleasure of mentoring graduate student Kendra Guck. Kendra came to us from Rush University’s Graduate Speech and Language Program and completed her practicum with us in August.  Good luck, Kendra. We believe that you’re well on your way to becoming a dynamic therapist!

The Wee Speech Team is back to work at the Day Schools this fall. Many of our clients might see Kate, Meghan or Devin in their school!  We are excited to once again offer speech and language services to students in the REACH programs.  It’s going to be another great year!

Julie and Laura will be at the National Association for Down Syndrome (NADS) Conference on October 1, 2016.  Julie will be presenting on the topic, “Birth-3, Oral Motor, Feeding and Speech-Language Skills”.  Laura will run the teen and adult programming.  Hope to see you there!

Thirty Million Words

We often talk about how language and vocabulary develop in children. Thirty Million Words is a book by Dr. Dana Suskind from the University of Chicago. Dr. Suskind is a pediatric cochlear implant surgeon who was looking into the discrepancy between language development outcomes for children with cochlear implant. Dr. Suskind's research led to what she refers to as the "3 T's". Tune In-by paying attention to what your child is communicating to you, Talk More-with your child using descriptive words to build his vocabulary, and Take Turns-by encouraging your child to respond to your words and actions. Dr. Suskind developed a parent education program to help families increase their childrens language skill. Read more about the Thirty Millions Words Initiative on the website thirtymillionwords.org

Back to school fun for kids! (more)

This Month in the Speech and Language Q/A Column, Kate discusses etiology of Language Disorder research.

Dear SLP,
My son was diagnosed with a language disorder a few months ago and therapy is going well. My husband and I want to have another child, but I'm concerned that we did something wrong with our first child. Did we cause the language disorder? Is it hereditary?
Sincerely, Planning for Parenting

Dear Planning for Parenting, First and foremost, you did nothing to cause your son's language disorder. There is no blame on you for saying/doing the “wrong thing”.(more)
