Insurance News

Wee Speech has become a United Health Care (UHC) provider as of 7/27/16.  We will be in network for Aetna as of 10/1/16!  Here’s some answers to commonly asked questions:

Will Wee Speech bill for services?  If your child is insured through UHC or Aetna (after 10/1/16), we will electronically send claims and receive payment for services. You will be responsible for deductibles, co-insurance or co-payment.

Since Wee Speech is an in-network provider, will my child’s speech be covered?  Coverage for services is determined by the insurance company’s criteria. Criteria for speech therapy coverage is based on medical necessity and your policies specifications.  It is not dependent on whether or not your provider is in network.

How do I learn if my child qualifies for paid speech therapy?  Several steps may be required to determine eligibility for insurance paid services.  Wee Speech can help you check your insurance coverage, obtain a pre-determination, pre-authorization or other needed documentation to aid in obtaining coverage.

Comings and Goings!

Wee Speech says a fond goodbye to Annie Gatziolis this month. Annie and her husband will be relocating to New York. We will miss her positive presence in the clinic and wish her well in this new chapter in her life!
Annie's caseload will be picked up by our new therapist Devin Manning M.S., CCC. Devin will start during Annie's last week to facilitate the transition. Welcome Devin!

This Month in the Speech and Language Q/A Column, Kate discusses iPads and AAC.

Dear SLP,
My son was born with cerebral palsy due to anoxia during delivery. He will be 3 soon and we've been working with Early Intervention every week. I'm starting to look toward the future as we start planning for him to attend school. I'm worried about how his speech will sound in the classroom. What can I expect long term for speech? He hasn't developed enough functional verbal speech and relies on his iPad to communicate. Is the iPad in the classroom a bad idea?

Trying for Talking

Dear Trying for Talking,
Sounds like you've had a busy few years! My answer to your question is YES, the iPad should go to school. Absolutely! Whatever your son's primary mode of communication is, that should be available to him in the classroom setting. (more)

Social Work Services in the Clinic

If you haven't met Lisa Marie Carlson, MSW, LCSW while at our Skokie office, please say hello. All our therapists at North Shore Family Services provide tools and strategies to help you and your child/teen with stress, anxiety, social skills, behavioral struggles, executive functioning, and overall better communication. We have worked in the schools and can help guide you to include appropriate goals in your IEPs, helpful accommodations for 504 plans, or even helping teachers feel more prepared to work with kids who may not learn the way "most" kids do. We work with preschoolers up to college age "kids" as well as young adults, couples, parents, and families. We are in-network for Blue Cross Blue Shield (though many of our out-of-network clients also get reimbursed for most of their costs for services) and also submit claims on your behalf (whew- less paperwork for you)!
